BEFORE THE INTERVIEW
Preparation, preparation, preparation ...
-
Needless to say, preparation is key
-
Prepare as you would an OSCE examination
-
Give yourself ample time - around 2-3 months
-
Finish up projects that will not be complete prior to interviews
-
Prepare your portfolio
-
Practice with contemporaries who are sitting for the same interview
-
Mock interviews with registrars and consultants
-
Book interview courses
-
Subscribe to interview question banks
Make a timeline
-
Lay out your goals to be achieved within certain timescales before the interview, for example:
-
6 months before - complete and submit final projects
-
3 months before - attend interview course, organise leave for interviews, make portfolio, start revision
-
2 months before - complete application
-
1 month before - book interview slot, travel tickets and accommodation
-
2 weeks before - attend mock interviews
-
1 week before - pack luggage for travel (interview clothes, toiletries, portfolio, etc)
-
3 days before - travel to London
-
1 day before - final revision, sleep early, lay out clothes, set alarm

Scoring yourself
-
Scoring yourself enables you to see where you stand ahead of interviews
-
Allows you to prepare well in advance if you are more than a year from applying
Portfolio preparation
-
Prepare your portfolio well in advance
-
Portfolio is a folder that contains and summarises all the evidence to verify your self-assessment during the interviews
-
Should be comprehensive enough to contain all required evidence, but not excessive that interview panelists may face difficulty in finding said evidence
-
Keep it neat and organised
-
Reduce unnecessary clutter
-
Know where to find each piece of evidence during the interview
-
*Note: If the interviewers cannot verify your evidence, points cannot be awarded*
-
Editor's suggestion: Use of a customised portfolio folder is optional and pricey but can make you stand out amongst other candidates
