WOUND DEBRIDEMENT

Preprocedural planning

  • Clinical assessment

    • History and examination​

      • What is the mechanism of injury?​​ Is this a clean or contaminated wound?

      • Any foreign bodies?

  • Consent

    • Obtaining written patient consent for the procedure, based on your understanding and clinical assessment of the reason for the procedure, benefits and risks, and allowing time of the patient to clarify questions about the procedure​​

  • Instruments and equipment

  • Choose the most suitable anaesthetic for the procedure​ - general or local

Preprocedural planning

Debriding a traumatic wound

  • After appropriate anaesthetic is administered, prep skin with Chlorhexidine or Vidine and apply sterile drapes

  • Inspect wound for contamination and foreign bodies

  • Excise dead or contaminate tissue

    • Preserve neurovascular structures​

  • Remove foreign bodies and place them in gallipot​

  • Wound lavage and irrigation​

  • If wound is large or very contaminated, dress wound for later inspection

  • If small and clean, close wound with sutures.
